Dr. Girish Kulkarni founder of SNEHALAYA, Maharastra

Snehalaya is an outstanding example of how youth in the country can make a difference in the lives of people. The inspiration is Swami Vivekanda who said, "They alone live, who live for others, the rest are more dead than alive" Established in 1989, this Organisation focuses on woman and children who are victims of commercial sexual exploitation. It works towards improving the condition of commercial sex workers, stopping trafficking in minor girls, rescuing them from brothels when it becomes aware of such cases (rehabilitated more than 50 victims from the flesh trade. Snehalaya has created history by securing a conviction of 20 influential persons of that area who sexually exploited a minor girl of 14 years. All 20 of them were sentenced to Double Life Imprisonment). Provides the children of such women with a secure future by giving them health and education facilities for their overall development. Also provides medical facilities and rehabilitation for HIV+ women and children. Snehalaya runs Balbhavans in 5 major slums of Nagar and provides after school coaching to nearly 1000 students. These Balbhavans have become the centres for overall development of these slums.

When no ordinary MBBS doctor was willing to settle down in Melghat tribal area, this highly qualified and dedicated couple, at the young age of 28, decided to stay in Dharni to serve the tribals. Mahan is the only organisation dedicated to providing medical facilities to Melghat - a hilly forest area in the Satpuda mountain ranges, where medical facilities are grossly inadequate (Doctor Patient ratio is one doctor per 10,000 patients). The Area has the highest mortality rate in under 5 children and in age group (16-50 years) in Maharastra.Mahan has already built a basic Nutrition Rehabilitation Unit cum General hospital. However, needs more funds urgently to provide more facilities by expanding the same. This unit is being used for treatment of childhood illnesses specially children suffering from malnutrition, nutrition education and training of village health workers and providing proper health facilities to rural and tribal families in that area. Many of their successful programmes have been adopted by the Government for all tribal areas of Maharashtra. Nileema Mishra Founder of Bhagini Nivedita Gramin Vigyan Niketan

The Founder President of the Institution is Ms Nileema Mishra who is a Magsaysay award winner
From early childhood, Nileema had decided to work in her village and work for its overall development. BNVGN's main work has been in the area of creating livelihood programmes for women – about 100 women are engaged in preparing “papad” & dry snacks (during non agriculture season), about 50 women are in the business of retailing items like fruits, vegetables, masalas, etc. About 100 women have been provided opportunity to produce quilts & embroidery work. The incomes of these women rose dramatically. BNGVN also created livelihood for nearly 3000 persons in tribal area of Sakri, Pimpalner of Dhule district. Looking at the success of BNGVN, the farmers have also taken the help of BNGVN to form Self Help Groups. The economic condition of more than 100 farmers has improved substantially and there has not been a single case of suicide in their area (despite being a drought area).

BNGVN is now engaged in the total overall development of 3 villages viz., Bahadarpur, Mahalpur, and Shirsode. It wants to convert these villages into ideal villages in respect of cleanliness, hygiene, availability of livelihood programmes. With the help of Caring Friends, BNGVN has created a revolving fund of Rs.20 lakhs from which it gives loans to meet the important and genuine needs of the village people at a nominal interest rate of 5%. This effort has helped more than 500 people during the last 4 years and there has not been a single default.
