Samaritan Help Mission (SHM) is a humanitarian educational institution based in the slums of Tikiapara, Howrah, a predominantly Muslim neighborhood with approximately 80% of the population being Muslims. SHM was started by a 32-year-old youth Mamoon Akhtar, with 5 of his friends who live in the same slum in 1999. The motto of the Mission is “HELP PEOPLE BASED ON NEED, NOT ON CREED”. It was started in a small thatched room without even an electric light in the year 1999. The basic objective was to save the children of this slum from falling prey to the drug mafia and getting involved into nefarious activities like bootlegging, drug peddling, smuggling, prostitution etc. Since 1999, SHM has started various programs such as ILLITERACY ELIMINATION PROGRAM, SAMARITAN KINDERGARTEN, VOCATIONAL TRAINING PROGRAM FOR GIRLS AND WIDOWS and COMPUTER LITERACY PROGRAM for the poor girls. SHM started with 6 Children in 1999, but has started an English medium school 3 years ago. Now there are about 1100 children in all the educational projects. Every year about 300 women are trained in vocational training programmes run by SHM.
